4.1.2 Performance Tests. Type filling and uniformity
of inking shall be performed in accordance with the procedures of ASTM F 497,
using 10 point pica type and ASTM F92.
4.1.2.1 Clean all type, then type 500 characters near the
start of the ribbon, using all the upper- and lower-case characters. Examine
for sharpness of characters and cleanliness of page.
4.1.2.2 Type 800 upper case’s and examine
the impressions for evidence filling.
4.1.2.3 Type 200 upper case H’s overtyped with upper case I’s
and X’s. determine the average reflection density from
10 readings.
(a) Repeat tests as cited in paragraphs 4.1.2.1, 4.1.2.2, and
4.1.2.3 (c) in
the middle and last thirds of ribbon. Clean the type before each series of
tests.
(b) Check for proper ribbon advance and reversal where
applicable.
(c) Repeat tests as cited in paragraphs 4.1.2.1 thru 4.1.2.3
on 3 more ribbons.
(d) Perform test as cited in paragraph 4.1.2.3 on the control
ribbon if required.
4.1.2.4 Weardown &
Recovery Test. Perform the following tests in accordance with procedures of
ASTM F 497, using freshly cleaned 10 point pica type and a new ribbon. Use
voltage regulators as recommended for the typewriters and the densitometer.
4.1.2.4.1 In this test the same position of ribbon is to be
used to type 121 lines. If the ribbon cannot be reversed or rewound at the end
of each line, the following procedure is to be used. Unwind approximately 1 m
of ribbon and lay the spool at one side of the machine, with the end of the
ribbon across the machine. By suitable means, fasten the ribbon to opposite
ends of the carriage with the ribbon in contact with the paper under just
enough tension to permit typing.
4.1.2.4.2 Insert a sheet of 75 g/m2 no.7 bond white paper.
Type 120 lines of approximately 50 upper-case H’s overtyped with the upper-case
I’s and X’s. for two color ribbons type only 75 lines
on each color. On lines 1, 110, 120, (1, 60, 75 for two-color ribbons) leave a
space between characters; do not leave a space between characters on the other
lines. On completion of the last line, allow 20 min. for recovery and then type
the recovery line ( the 121st for single-color and
76th for two-color), allowing a space between characters.
4.1.2.45 Oiliness. Retain the test
sheet descripbed the weardown and recovery test for 24 hours then
examine both sides of the sheet for evidence of oil stains around the letters.
5. Packaging.
Packaging, packing, palletization,
and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
