COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
LEAD, DRAWING
The General Services Administration, Office Supplies & Paper Products Commodity Center, New York, NY 10278 has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This description covers leads to be used by artists, draftsman, and designers in appropriate mechanical pencils (lead holders).
Leads shall be of two types:
Type I- graphite for drawings and sketching and for working directly on drawing or tracing paper.
Type II- plastic based or polymer for use on drafting film.
I. Salient characteristics.
A. Type I. Type I leads shall produce uniformly dense, dark, opaque marks when used on paper. Marks shall be smudge resistant, shall reproduce clearly and shall erase cleanly without ghosting when using a pencil type rubber eraser, artgum eraser or plastic film eraser.
B. Type II. Type II leads shall produce uniformly dense, dark, opaque marks when used on drafting film. Marks shall be smudge proof, shall reproduce clearly and shall erase cleanly without ghosting, when using a plastic film eraser.
C. Strength and Resilience. Leads shall be continuously smooth marking, and shall not crumble or chip, and shall be of such strength and resilience so as to reduce breakage when used properly.
