C. The scale shall be a minimum of 20.32 cm (8 inches), and a maximum 22.86 cm (9 inches) long, excluding the file-punch gage aperture.
D. The scale shall be curved in the general shape of a typewriter platen.
E. The scale shall be constructed so that it can be inserted easily from the side of the typewriter in a manner to prevent carbon(s) from smudging the copy when the scale is used as an erasing guard and other purposes as applicable.
F. The scale shall have vertical and horizontal typewriter scales.
G. The scale shall have clear, sharp and legible graduations and marking graduations and markings shall be applied in accordance with normal commercial practice.
H. The scale shall be provided with a file-punch gage aperture.
I. The upper edge and lower edge of the scale face shall be marked with graduations. The upper edge shall be elite 12 spaces per 2.54 cm (12 spaces per inch) or pica 10 spaces per 2.54 cm (10 spaces per inch) typewriter character spaces in inches, as applicable. The lower edge shall be elite 6 spaces per cm (6 spaces per inch) or pica 6 spaces per 2.54 cm (6 spaces per inch), single-space typewriter lines, as applicable.
J. The scales shall be clearly marked, either on the face if the scale or the file-punch gage aperture, to identify the type of scale, “Elite” or “Pica”, as applicable.
K. The scales’ surface that has the graduations shall be finished with a protective epoxy coating on the entire surface of the scale and aperture facing.
L. The scales shall be marked with the manufacturer’s name or trademark, in accordance with normal commercial practice.
M. Workmanship. The scales shall be free from stains, buckles, blisters, grease, sharp edges, bent or broken aperture, or any other imperfections which will affect the scales’ appearance and/or serviceability.
