COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
PENCIL, LEAD DRAWING
This Commercial Item Description has been approved for promulgation by the General Services Administration, Office Supplies & Paper Products Commodity Center, New York, NY 10278.
This commercial item description covers black lead drawing pencils intended for fine line writing and used by artists, draftsman, accountants, statisticians, and designers.
I. Salient characteristics.
A. Pencils shall be wood or paper cased with black lead in diameters as specified in section I E and section VIII. The casing shall be round or hexagonal finished with non-offensive colored lacquer. The length of the pencil shall be not less than 17.4 cm (6 7/8 inches) not including the eraser in conformance with section II B.
B. The eraser shall be in accordance with the latest revision of Commercial Item Description A-A-132 of the eraser type normally used for this type of pencil and shall be crimped or otherwise attached to the casing, by use of a metal or plastic collar.
C. Pencils shall produce marks normally made by pencils, when used on paper. Marks shall be smudge resistant, shall reproduce clearly and shall erase cleanly without ghosting when using a pencil type rubber eraser, artgum eraser or plastic film eraser.
D. Leads shall be continuously smooth marking, and shall not crumble or chip,-and shall-be-of such strength and resilience so as to reduce breakage when used properly.
