2.6 Fading. Writing shall be legible after being exposed as specified in section 3.5.
2.7 Resistance to water. (Type II only) Writing tested in accordance with 3.7 shall not smear or smudge.
2.8 Shelf Life. The items shall have a shelf life of one year after delivery and shall be capable of withstanding normal usage and handling.
2.9 Workmanship. The ink shall be free from defects or imperfections of manufacture that shall affect its durability, appearance, serviceability or present a hazard to the user.
3. TEST METHODS.
3.1 Performance. This test shall be performed with a fountain pen normally used for this type of ink. Fill the pen. On a firm surface place a sheet of bond paper and proceed to make 10 letters. After 10 minutes examine the letters for legibility, intensity, smearing and feathering.
3.2 Drying time. Writing prepared as specified in 3.1 shall be allowed to dry for 5 seconds at room temperature. Place a sheet of white chemical wood writing paper over the markings. Place a hundred gram weight on the edge of the paper and draw the sheet of paper slowly across the markings. Examine the paper smudging.
3.3 Clogging. After the writing test described in 3.1 replace the fountain pen cap. Keep the pen for five days in a horizontal position in a room or cabinet at room temperature. At the conclusion of this period, repeat the writing test.
3.4 Reaction to metal parts. Immerse for one week a common steel pen point in a sample of ink. At the end of the week, the pen point shall be in a serviceable condition so that it shall be used for writing. The pen point shall be slightly etched, corroded or pitted.
3.5 Fading. Expose sample of writing performed as in section 3.1 to the radiation of a carbon arc lamp such as Fade-o-meter type FDA-R or its equivalent, 48 hours at a distance of 25 cm. Examine for legibility.
3.6 Washability. (Type I only) Cut pieces of white cotton broadcloth one inch square. Please a drop of ink on the cloth and rub into the cloth. Rinse in water and boil in normal commercial toilet soap for 2 hours. Examine for stain.
3.7 Resistance to water (Type II only). Writing (Prepare as specified in 3.1) shall be allowed to dry for 2 hours at room temperature. Immerse the paper for 24 hours in water. Remove the paper and let air dry. Examine for legibility.
