TAB SET, SIGNAL, PLASTIC
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial
item description as a replacement for Federal Specification L-T-30 which has
been cancelled.
This commercial item description covers plastic signal tabs
and tab sets. Tabs shall be designed for use with visible file cards.
Classification. Tabs shall be non projection type and shall be of the following
classes, and colors as specified (see Section 7).
Class A – Transparent, Crimped without cut out.
Class B – Metal Reinforced.
Color – 1 – Blue
2 – Green
3 – Orange
4 – Red
5 – Yellow
1. Salient Characteristics
A. Tabs shall be designed for use with visible file cards.
B. Class A, transparent tabs shall be rectangular in shape. The tabs shall be
made of any commercially acceptable plastic and shall be 0.010 inch +
0.001 inch thick. The transparency of the plastic shall be such that signal
tabs will not perceptibly diminish the visibility of printed matter. The tabs
shall be furnished as individual signals or in scored strips. Tabs in strip
from shall break cleanly and evenly at scoring. One end of the tab shall be
another position on cards, and removed entirely without removing cards from
pockets. The tabs shall be 7/8 inch + 1/16 inch long and 1/4 inch +
1/32 inch wide. Tabs shall be furnished in blue, green, orange, red or yellow,
as specified (See Section 7).
C. Class B, tabs shall be made of transparent plastic reinforced with metal.
The tabs shall be made of any commercially acceptable plastic and shall be
0.010 inch + 0.001 inch thick. The metal used shall not be affected by
the test in section 2. The reinforcement may be in the form of a flat piece of
formed metal, or two strands of wire parallel to the longer dimension and
imbedded between two sheets of plastic. When tabs are made of two sheets of plastic,
the total thickness of both sheets shall be 0.010 inch + 0.001 inch
thick and wires shall be no more than 1/8 inch but less than 3/16 inch apart.
Except for the open end, the tabs shall be rectangular in shape. The
transparency of the plastic shall be such that signal tabs will not perceptibly
diminish the visibility of printed matter. The tabs shall be furnished as
individual signals or in scored strips. Tabs in strip form shall break cleanly
and evenly at scoring. The edges of the tabs shall be free from metal
projections which might constitute a personal hazard to the user. The tabs shall
be 7/8 inch + 3/16 inch long and 5/16 inch + 1/32 inch wide. Tabs
shall be furnished in blue, green, red, or yellow as specified (See Section 7).
