COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
TAPE, PRESSURE SENSITIVE ADHESIVE, MASKING
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description in preference to Federal Specification
PPP-T-42, Types I and II.
This description covers two types of pressure sensitive tapes for use in masking surfaces temporarily during operations.
Salient characteristics:
Type I tape shall have a crepe paper backing and shall comply with the applicable requirements of Table I.
Type II tape shall have a flat paper backing and shall comply with the applicable requirements of Table I.
The paper backing shall be such that finishing materials commonly used will not penetrate sufficiently to have a deleterious effect on the furnished surface covered by the tape.

Sampling and examination shall be in accordance with the producer’s standard practice as long as it provides equivalent assurance to that found in ASTM D 3715, with end item testing at an acceptance level (AQL of 4 percent).
The issue of the ASTM standards in effect on the date of the solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with these requirements.
Workmanship. Tape shall be uniformly constructed and free from defects which may impair usefulness of the materials for the intended use. The adhesive shall be coated in a smooth uniform layer over the entire surface of one side of the tape backing. When unwound, the tape shall not tear nor shall the adhesive separate from the backing. The tape shall be evenly and tightly wound with no voids. The edges shall be clean cut.
Regulatory requirements. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials in accordance with Public Law 94-580 to the maximum extent practicable.
Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling and marking. Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
