This commercial item description covers extruded crayons for marking on green, wet, dry lumber.
1. Salient Characteristics:
A. The crayons shall produce smooth uniform marking qualities and shall consist of clay base consisting of a mixture of pigment or suitable coloring matter, a good grade of clay and a satisfactory binder.
B. The crayon shall meet the requirements in section 2 when tested with the appropriate test method.
C. The crayons shall have a minimum length of 11.43 cm + 0.8 cm (4-1/2 inches + 1/32 inches) and the width between opposite sides of 1.27 cm + 0.08 cm (1/2 inch + 1/32 inch) (SEE FIG 1).
D. The crayon shall be of the colors specified, blue, black, red, or yellow (See Section 7).
E. The crayon shall be hexagonally shaped with a point at one end.
F. The crayons shall be individually marked with the manufacturer’s name or trademark and the color of the crayon on a durable paper wrapper. The paper wrapper shall be securely fastened to the sides of the crayon, and shall be 1.91 cm + 0.64 cm (3/4 + 1/4 inch) from the pointed end and extend to within 0.95 cm + 0.32 cm (3/8 + 1/8 inch) of the blunt end (SEE FIG 1).
G. The crayon shall have hardness as tested by the breaking strength test specified in Section 2 (See Section 7).
Workmanship. The crayons shall be free from any defect that may affect its serviceability, durability and appearance.
