3.2.3.3. Class 2, Style B. The binding mechanism shall be of the hinged type combination of metal and plastic. One part of the hinge shall be permanently attached to each cover and is identified hereinafter as the hinge plate. A second part shall receive the flexible posts and is identified hereinafter as the post housing. The hinge plate and post housing shall be joined by a piano style hinge with a steel pin. The pin shall be fitted in a manner that the pin will not protrude from the hinge or fall out during use. The hinge plate shall be made from cold-rolled steel, not less than 0.84 mm (0.033”) in thickness, and shall overlap the inner surface of the respective cover at least 30.16 mm (1-3/16”) and the length shall be the designated sheet size with the tolerance of + 6.4 mm (+ 1/4”). Each post housing shall have post holes in the number and with center to center spacing specified, and shall be made of plastic conforming to 1-2-1 of ASTM D 1788. The top cover post housing shall have two sliding or latch type locking devices, one on or near end of the housing to secure flexible posts. The bottom cover post housing shall have post holes to accept the flexible posts. The sliding locking device shall be made of cold-rolled steel, not less than 0.58 mm (0.023~) in thickness and of sufficient width to slide over and cover the flexible posts, or plastic material conforming to 1-2-1 of ASTM D 1788. A pull device and a slide stop shall be provided on each sliding locking devices.
3.2.4. Posts. Posts for Class 1 binders (top and bottom loading) shall be nylon or wire fully encased in plastic, at the option of the manufacturer (see 3.2.4.1 & 3.2.4.2). Nylon posts for the Class 1 binder shall have both ends tapered. Nylon posts for the Class 2 binder (top loading) shall be nylon with one end tapered and a slotted head on the opposite end. The diameter of the head shall be larger than that of the post in accordance with good commercial practice. When heads of the posts are recessed in the binder, slot shall be designed and construed in a manner to permit tightening or removal of posts. Tightening or removal of posts shall be interpreted to mean by means of a small screwdriver or other applicable device. Posts shall be flexible and sufficiently stable so as not to loosen in the binding mechanism nor break or take a permanent set when compressed by the locking device(s). Replacement posts shall be furnished, as specified (see 8.1.5).
3.2.4.1. Nylon posts. Nylon posts shall be 3.18 + 0.10 mm (0.125 + 0.004)” in diameter, and shall conform to ASTM D 789.
3.2.4.2. Wire posts. The posts shall consist of at least seven strands of No. 22 annealed, galvanized wire encased in plastic in accordance with normal commercial practice. The plastic shall completely encase the wire, including the ends. The posts shall be not less than 2.84 mm (0.112”) nor more than 3.30 mm (0.130”) in outside diameter.
