COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
PENCIL, CARPENTER
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description in preference to Federal Specification SS-P-166D, Type I.
This commercial item description covers wood cased lead pencils for use as a marking medium on lumber.
I. Salient characteristics.
A. Pencils shall be wood cased with black lead 0.150 inches in diameter (minimum). The casing shall be oval or flat finished with bright colored lacquer. The length of the pencil shall be not less than 6.75 inches in conformance with normal commercial practice (See section II A).
B. Lead shall be centered within the casing and securely bonded (glued) to the casing throughout the entire length. Lead shall be continuously smooth marking, make clearly visible lines, and not crumble or dust.
C. The wood casing shall be straight, the two halves securely bonded (glued) throughout the entire length of the pencil and in conformance with normal commercial practice.
D. When sharpened the wood casing shall not split, splinter or tear, shall present a smooth finish, and the lead shall not crumble or break.
E. Pencils shall be marked with the manufacturer’s name or trademark, and the color of the case shall be in accordance with normal commercial practice.
