3. TEST METHODS
3.1 Performance. This test shall be performed with a fountain pen normally used
for this type of ink. Fill the pen. On a firm surface place a sheet of-bond
paper and proceed to make 10 letters. After 10 minutes examine the letters for
legibility, intensity, smearing and feathering.
3.2 Drying time. Writing prepared as specified in 3.1 shall be allowed to dry
for 5 seconds at room temperature. Place a sheet of white chemical wood writing
paper over the markings. Place a hundred gram weight on the edge of the paper
and draw the sheet of paper slowly across the markings. Examine the paper for
smudging.
3.3 Clogging. After the writing test described in 3.1 replace the fountain pen
cap. Keep the pen for five days in a horizontal position in a room or cabinet
at room temperature. At the conclusion of this period, repeat the writing test.
3.4 Reaction to metal parts. Immerse for one week a common steel pen point in a
sample of ink. At the end of the week, the pen point shall be in a serviceable
condition so that it may be used for writing. The pen point may be slightly
etched, corroded or pitted.
3.5 Fading. Expose a sample of writing performed as in section 3.1 to the
radiation of a carbon arc lamp such as Fade-o-meter type FDA-R or its
equivalent, 48 hours at a distance of 25 cm. Examine for legibility.
3.6 Washability. (Type I only) Cut a piece of white cotton broadcloth ten square
cm. Place 10 drops of ink on the cloth and rub into the cloth. Allow cloth to
dry for one hour. Wash in a normal commercial washing machine on hot water (60
degree C) and durable fabric setting without bleach using a standard household
detergent. Allow the cloth to dry and examine for stain.
