BINDER, LOOSE-LEAF (WITH OR WITHOUT FLEXIBLE PRONG)

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal SpecificationUU-D-335 which has been cancelled.

This specification covers loose-leaf binders made of pressboard and equipped with or without metal prong fastener and compressor, for use in containing paper.

Classification

Binders covered by this description shall be of the following types and classes as specified (see Section 7):

Type I. High density, nonprinting grade

Class I. Without metal prong fastener and compressor.
Class II. With metal prong fastener and compressor.

Type II. Medium density, nonprinting grade

Class I. Without metal prong fastener and compressor
Class II. With metal prong fastener and compressor

1. Salient Characteristics

A. The binder cover and binder stick shall be made of Type I or Type II pressboard as defined in section 2 when tested with the appropriate test method. Unless specified (see Section 7), the supplier may provide either Type pressboard.

B. The hinge assembly shall consist of cloth glued to a binding stick and shall have 1/4 inch holes spaced 2-3/4, 4-1/4, 5-1/2, 7, or 8-1/2 inches apart, equidistant from the center of the hinge and approximate center of the width (determined visually) of the binding stick. The cloth shall overlap the binding stick and shall be glued to each side of the binder cover over a width of not less than 1/2 inch. The distance between the binder cover and the stick shall be sufficient to permit flexing without interference. The hinge length shall be the same as the length of the binder.

C. The cloth hinge shall have a thread count of not less than 60 threads in the warp, and not less than 50 threads in the filling direction. The cloth hinge shall have an Elmendorf tearing strength of not less than 70 gms (direct reading) in the long direction of the binder. The color of the cloth shall be brown, for red pressboard; and, black for all other color pressboard.
