COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CHALK, LINE MARKING, POWDER and CHALK MARKING
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description as a replacement for Federal Specification SS-C-255 which has been cancelled.
This commercial item description covers two types of chalk.
Type I – Chalk, line marking, powder (carpenters’ chalk)
Type II – Chalk, marking (railroad chalk)
The type I chalk, line marking, commonly known as carpenters’ chalk, is intended for use in construction work for the purpose of transferring a chalk line from a length of string to the work.
Type II chalk, marking, commonly known as railroad chalk, is intended for the purpose of making identification marks on wood, metal, stone, and concrete.
1. Salient Characteristics
A. Type I chalk. The chalk shall weigh no less than 7 pounds per gross. The chalk shall be hemispherical in shape, and shall have a base diameter of not less than 2 inches, and shall be not less than 3/4 inch in height.
Type II chalk. The chalk shall weigh no less than 8 pounds per gross. The chalk shall be conical in shape, and shall be not less than 3-3/4 inches long, and tapered with the smaller end rounded. When specified in the contract or order, the chalk shall be uniformly coated with a suitable enamel for cleanliness in handling.
B. The color of the chalk shall be white, blue, red, or yellow, as specified in the contract or order.
C. The chalk shall meet the requirements of section 2 when tested with the appropriate test method.
Workmanship. The chalk shall have a smooth uniform surface and shall be free from any defect that may affect its appearance, performance or use.
