Style B. Style B binder shall be of a mechanical hinge, piano style, with an outside locking mechanism in the top hinge plate, and be designed for loading from top only.
B. Construction (general). Each binder shall consist of two separable covers, hinged to cover stubs or plates, as applicable, for containment of a binding mechanism. Construction shall be such that no parts of the binders will mar smooth surfaces. Metal hinge components shall be properly secured and aligned. Hinges shall be recessed into plates in accordance with normal commercial practice, and plates and covers shall lay flat on smooth, even surfaces. Covers shall have round corners on the side of the binder, parallel to the binding side.
Covers. Covers shall be of pressboard, 0.51 ± 0.03 mm (0.020 ± 0.001)” in thickness. Pressboard shall be scored at the hinges, and stubs shall be fashioned to support the binding mechanism in accordance with normal commercial practice.
Binding Mechanism. Post holes shall be provided in both top and bottom covers to receive and securely retain flexible posts. All binders shall have two post holes spaced on proper centers to utilize sprockets feed holes of the sheet size specified. Requirements for additional post holes (multiple spacing) shall be as specified (see 6.c). The binding mechanisms shall consist of two channel bars fabricated from cold-rolled steel not less than o 0.46 ± 0.05 mm (0.018 ± 0.002)” in thickness. As an alternative, the binding mechanisms may be fabricated from 1.0 mm (0.040”) thick plastic conforming to 1-2-1 of ASTM D 1788. One channel bar shall be attached to each cover stub by at least three metal rivets or grommets. One rivet or grommet shall be positioned in the center and one near each end of the binding mechanism. The rivets or grommets shall have sufficient upset to permanently secure the channel bars to the cover stub. Each channel bar shall have post holes in the number and with center spacing specified, and shall be fitted with two slide locks to secure the flexible posts. Stops for slide locks shall be provided in each channel bar. The slide locks shall be made of steel or plastic material. Plastic slide locks shall conform to 1-2-1 of ASTM D 1788. Slide locks shall be of sufficient thickness and design to withstand repeated opening and closing. When covers are attached to the binding mechanism, post holes shall be in alignment.
Class 2, Style A. The binding mechanism shall be as specified above except that the bottom channel bar shall be without slide locks and shall have post holes to accept the flexible posts. Alternately, at the option of the manufacturer, a steel bar or bar with post holes to accept the flexible posts may be furnished in place of the bottom channel bar, provided it is equal or greater in thickness to the channel bar specified above.
