COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
LEAD, SYNTHETIC
The General Services Administration, Office Supplies Paper Products Commodity
Center, New York, NY 10278 has authorized the use of this Commercial Item
Description.
This description covers leads to be used for general writing in appropriate
mechanical pencils (lead holders).
I. Salient characteristics.
A. Composition. Leads shall be plastic based or polymer and shall
produce uniformly dense, dark, opaque marks when used on paper. Marks shall be
smudge resistant, and shall erase cleanly without ghosting when using a pencil
type rubber eraser, artgum eraser or plastic film eraser.
B. Strength and Resilience. Leads shall be continuously smooth marking,
and shall not crumble or chip, and shall be of such strength and resilience so
as to reduce breakage when used properly.
C. Length of the Lead. The length of the lead shall be as required (see
section VIII) with a tolerance of 2.0 mm. Length shall be in accordance with
section II. (Units and numerical values are given in accordance with the
International System of Units.)
D. Diameter of the Lead. The diameter of the lead shall be as required
in the ordering information (see section VIII) with a tolerance of 0.02 mm.
Diameter shall be in accordance with section II.
